Pastoral Care


Each girl is a valued member of the school community and the welfare, dignity and happiness of all our students is at the heart of school policy.

Pastoral care and attention to the needs of the individual are particularly important. Over the years our pastoral policy has evolved so that each student’s development is closely monitored while given the freedom and space to develop at her own rate.

Each year group has its own social area enabling girls to mix freely with their peers. It is an intrinsic part of our ethos that the girls care for each other and weave a culture of inclusion within the school.

In order to create a level of care that is appropriate to the different age groups, each year is assigned a Head of Year who oversees the general welfare of the students. Also each class is assigned a class teacher who, together with the subject teachers, monitors the students’ academic and social developments throughout the year.

The Principal and Deputy Principal are always at hand to meet with the students, to listen to them, to give advice and support or simply to chat.

The size of the school fosters a relaxed and happy atmosphere and allows the Principal and staff to know each girl individually. The spirit of the school ensures that the students will always find a sympathetic ear and the necessary supports, both inside and outside the classroom.

Presentation is, by tradition, a family school and every effort is made to respond to the diverse needs and expectations of parents.

We recognise the great trust implied with the arrival of every new student and we do our very best to measure up to it.

Programmes are evaluated and improved on an ongoing basis.

In 2012 an Introductory programme for first years was introduced with Mr. Seamus Whitty speaking to 1st years on arrival in the school with a follow-up talk for them in November as well as an evening talk for first year parents.

In 2013, a Preparation for Leaving Cert programme was introduced for 5th years with talks on Study skills, Group outings in P.E. , Retreat Day and Aptitude tests. The combination of these events helps 5th Year students get to know other girls in their year as classes get mixed in different option subjects , 4th years and Junior certs mix, and will also  help them to focus on the very important 2 years ahead.

 Counselling and Support

 The school’s Guidance Counsellors are available to help individual students when the need arises.

 Any student may make an appointment to see the counsellor in the Guidance Counsellor’s office.

 This gives the student an opportunity to talk about anything she wishes knowing that their concerns will be dealt with in confidence.

 In daily sessions with students the Guidance Counsellor addresses a wide variety of needs, some students come seeking information, some have more personal problems such as misunderstandings, fears, confusion, anxiety and so on. The counsellor helps students find ways of building resilience and enabling them to solve their own problems.

 Most counselling appointments are made by the students themselves but sometimes they are referred by the Principal, Deputy Principal, Pastoral Care Team, Year head, Parent or Teacher.

 Practical ways to help students.

1. Show real interest in the young person’s life. Try to understand her point of view.

2. Learn about adolescence and the teen years, about the difficulties in becoming an adult in today’s world.

3. Make it easy to study by providing the right conditions. 

4. Try to avoid being too critical of the young person’s own ideas. Friendly discussion will clarify things more quickly than a critical attitude.

5. Help the young person make their own decisions. They will be more open to your help and advice if they see you respect their opinion and decisions.

6. Encourage the young person to think in terms of a group of similar careers rather than a particular course. This prevents students from preparing for only one course which, in fact they might not get.

7. Young people who are reminded too often of their shortcomings may have their personal growth blocked. Have faith in the young person. In the right atmosphere of respect and understanding, young people can develop in an almost unbelievable way.




  • The Year Head is the link teacher for each year group and in keeping with our mission statement, ensures a fostering of links between home and school. The remit of the Year Head spreads across three areas of responsibility with regard to the students in his/her care. These are: Academic Progression, Pastoral Care and the observance of the School Code of Positive Behaviour by the year group.
  • A weekly meeting of the Principal, Deputy Principal, Year Heads and Guidance Counsellors is held that gives the opportunity to highlight issues that need to be addressed and identify students who may need specific support.
  • Year Heads are available to meet parents/guardians by appointment should they wish to discuss any school-related problems.
  • The Year Head is a central figure in the school community. She/he provides a critical link between senior management and tutors/class teachers.

Peer mentoring is an essential element of the pastoral care system in our school.  Each year, Fifth Year students take on this leadership role in the school as they work to support First Year students to become familiar with and to settle into their new environmentMentors meet the First Year students on a formal and informal basis, acting as a support system for them and as role models of good behaviour. 

Apart from helping the First Year girls to settle into school, we feel that the mentors play a valuable role in creating a positive school spirit.  They also benefit from it themselves as it  helps them to develop and to improve their communication, listening and organisational skills.

Mentors undergo training to help them to understand their role, to address challenges and problems that might arise and to plan for the year.  They are also supported by a liaison teacher.
