TY students at Presentation Secondary School in Tralee have just completed their first “Activity Week” of the year with a varied schedule of events. The group were lucky that their assigned day for the Ploughing championships was Tuesday so they had the best of the weather as well as all the event had to offer and the early start was well worthwhile! Another beautiful day was spent learning to surf in Banna as part of their PE programme. 2 subject field trips were also held. The history trip to Caherciveen took in the historical Church with a talk by local historian Junior Murphy and then onto Derrynane to visit the birthplace of Daniel O’Connell the Liberator and take in the newly refurbished Derrynane House. One school based day combined a walk to explore the Blennerville area and the completion of raised beds in a poly tunnel for the school gardening club due to begin shortly. The latter task involved hands-on  teamwork and problem-solving as the girls joined the timber to form the beds as well as lining them with plastic to protect the wood.  The Geography Field trip to Clare took in the Cliffs of Moher of course but importantly from a geography point of view the world renowned Karst region of the Burren in all it’s splendour including a visit to the Ailwee cave and Poulnabrone dolmen. Work done and information gathered during this field trip will be the basis of classwork in the coming weeks.
